Our bear hunts are run out of our backcountry camps in the heart of the beautiful St Joe river mountains. Our operating area receives very little hunting pressure, is mostly roadless and very rugged resulting in high bear densities but most importantly an exceptional number of mature bears. Our area also produces a high percentage of color phase bears. In our bear camps the mornings come early with hot breakfast and coffee, birds singing their morning song and the hounds eager to get on the move with noses to the wind. Sometimes referred to as “The long walker” lions are the apex predator within their ecosystem. Living a mostly solitary life except when breeding occurs. Mature Tom’s can and do travel great distances within their immense and rugged home range here in the bitter roots. Our operating area experiences almost no outside pressure due to the fact that it and the surrounding areas are very remote and mostly roadless. This along with an abundance of prey species creates an environment that allows lions to reach full potential and allows us to successfully target mature Tom lions. Almost all of our lion hunters have the opportunity to pursue bobcats with hounds. Bobcats are often overlooked, underrated, and underestimated by many and not without reason. They are small, fairly common and you may think of them as nothing more than an oversized barn cat. This couldn’t be further from the truth. They are incredibly successful and deadly hunters with a kill success rate that rivals the best predators in the world. They have a very diverse range of prey species from rabbits, mice, grouse and wild turkey to beavers and even adult deer! Bobcats are cunning, they leave very little scent for a hound to follow, and they live in some of the roughest terrain God ever put on this earth which they use to their advantage in evading hounds. Pursuing bobcats with hounds is at the top of the list in dog ability and very exciting for the hunter. We encourage our clients to add bobcat to their hunt because we know you will enjoy it as much as we do!
